What To Do About Low Value, Bad, or Spam Backlinks post thumbnail image

Every website will eventually have some low quality, spammy, and plain bad junky backlinks pointing at it — but what should you do about them? In this video, we explain EXACTLY what you should do — get your free website review @

Backlinks are incredibly important for ranking at the top of Google, they have been and always will be one of the most important aspects of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

Some backlinks, however, are bad news. They can hurt a website and could stop a website from ranking where it could be. Most, if not all of these, are automatically created by websites which automatically crawl and copy the content of other pages, normally for the purpose of putting dozens of ads and affiliate links on so that they can make some money.

Some bad links, however, are crafted on purpose. We call this Negative SEO.

Negative SEO is the process of someone, normally a competitor, paying for cheap low-quality backlinks (such as the rubbish links you can buy from Fiverr) and pointing them at your website in the hope that Google sees them and then penalises the website.

Google has engineered the algorithm exceptionally well over the past decade to get better at automatically finding and ignoring low-quality links, which means that automatically created links and backlinks from negative SEO should be largely ignored today — however, we find it’s still a good best practice to keep an eye on your backlinks to make sure that your backlink profile is as healthy as you can manage, given that you have full control over it.

Finding all of your backlinks isn’t difficult to do, but it may require more than one tool to do.

We find the backlinks for our client’s by using a combination of Google Search Console, Moz’s Link Explorer, Majestic, and SEMrush (you can try SEMrush by visiting thankyouninjas.com). We then compile these into one list and then review them.

Where possible, we remove low-quality, bad, or spammy backlinks by contacting the owners of the websites in question, but if we’re not able to that then we may choose to submit a disavow file to Google instead.

A disavow file is a simple text document that you can send to Google with the intention that Google chooses to ignore those links when reviewing the backlink profile for that website.

This can be particularly useful when a website has bad backlinks that they bought themselves in the past or were created by an older questionable digital marketing agency.

Submitting a disavow file is a very easy thing to do, but if done badly then can result in bad ranking drops for websites. For that reason, we suggest that anyone submitting a disavow file does so with extreme caution.
