In this HTML tutorial we will learn about the HyperText Markup Language. We will start with the very basics and move on to more advanced concepts as we progress. This tutorial is designed for absolute beginners so no prior knowledge of HTML is required.

HTML is the standard markup language for creating web pages and web applications. With Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript, it forms a triad of cornerstone technologies for the World Wide Web.

Web browsers receive HTML documents from a web server or from local storage and render them into multimedia web pages. HTML describes the structure of a web page semantically and originally included cues for the appearance of the document.

HTML elements are the building blocks of HTML pages. With HTML constructs, images and other objects, such as interactive forms, may be embedded into the rendered page. It provides a means to create structured documents by denoting structural semantics for text such as headings, paragraphs, lists, links, quotes and other items. HTML elements are delineated by tags, written using angle brackets.

The first historically recorded use of markup was in an 1832 letter from Charles Babbage to Lady Ada Lovelace inviting her to translate Italian poet Luigi Menabrea’s scientific essay on Babbage’s new Analytical Engine analytical engine project between 1840 and 1842 into English; Babbage wrote: “I wish to engage you to translate Menabrea’s Sketch of my Analytical Engine Into English… The limits which I should wish to have assigned me would be such that I could complete my work within a period of twelve months at most; but I would much rather leave it unfinished than that you should be prevented from bringing out your work on account of any delay on my part.” In this letter he enclosed several pages of notes which included detailed analysis and algorithms which semenabrea was working on at that time . Ada Lovelace completed her translation in just a few weeks however she included her own “Notes” which were much longer than Babbage’s original work . These “Notes” included her own thoughts , observations and ideas about how his machine could be used . The first appearance in print of Ada Lovelace’s translation was in Taylor’s Scientific Memoirs , Vol 3 1843 . Since then “markup” has been used to describe various aspects of document preparation , processing and interchange .

The usage of “HTML” for tagging content began in 1986 when Tim Berners-Lee introduced it in a memo at CERN
