As a harbour city, Lyttelton is very proud of its maritime heritage and the essential role that our harbour plays in supporting the city and region.

The harbour is home to a number of different types of vessels, including tugs. Tugs are specialised types of vessels that are used for towing or pushing other vessels or objects. They’re an essential part of any harbour operation and play a vital role in keeping the harbour safe.

Lyttelton Tug boat was built in 1957 by John Jones at his Port Chalmers shipyard. The tug was commissioned by the Ministry of Works for use in the construction of breakwaters in Lyttelton Harbour. After completing its breakwater duties, the tug was then used for general towing and pushing operations in the harbour.

The Lyttelton Tug boat is an iconic vessel in the history of Lyttelton Harbour and is now retired from active service. However, she remains an important part of our maritime heritage and is cherished by our community.

In 2019, the Lyttelton Tugboat Preservation Society was formed with the aim of preserving and celebrating the history of this iconic vessel. As part of this endeavour, we are working towards creating a website that will share the story of the Lyttelton Tug boat with as many people as possible.

This website will be a valuable resource for anyone interested in maritime history or looking to learn more about one of Lyttelton’s most loved icons. It will also act as a platform to promote the ongoing preservation efforts of the Lyttelton Tugboat Preservation Society.

We hope you will join us on this journey as we work to preserve the history of the Lyttelton Tug boat for future generations.
