How to Register Your Freelance Business post thumbnail image

Wondering how to set up and register your freelance business? As a freelancer, you want to establish yourself as a legitimate business. To do so you will need a name and then register the business with your state.

Although each state handles business registration differently, the process is often the same. If you’re a freelancer, you need to first check to see if your business name is already taken in your state. To do so, search your state’s business name database. Start with a google search to see if another freelancer or company is already using the business name you’ve chosen.

Once you find a business name that hasn’t been taken by another freelancer or business, you can move to the business registration. Google for incorporating in your state or simply, “Register business in” and enter your state name.

The registration process is very easy. Answer a few questions and pay a registration fee. However, before registering, or perhaps during the registration process, make sure to get an EIN (employer identification number). The EIN is required to open a checking account which you will need for your freelance business. This is extremely important.

Registering your freelance business provides a number of benefits which we will discuss in future episodes of the Freelancer Profit System video series. Learn more at
